In the Prologue, what does the chorus say will happen to the two lovers? That they will take their own lives
What is the setting? Verona, Italy
Who does Gregory say the fight is between? The two families.
Who does Tybalt hate? The Montague’s.
How many brawls/fights have happened because of the two families’ feud? Three
What decree does the Prince Escalus of Verona make after the street brawl? “If it happens again, the punishment will be death.”
What does Montague say about the way Romeo has been acting? Sad and depressed
Why is Romeo sad? Because of Roselyn
What advice does Benvolio give to Romeo about Rosaline? That he should move on and find a different girl.
Who is Paris and why has he called on Capulet? He is the one that Juliet’s family wants him to marry. Very rich and from good family. He was called on her because he was asking for Juliet’s hand in marriage.
How does Capulet respond to Paris’ proposal? Does he offer encouragement? To wait two more years because she’s only 13 years old.
The Capulets (Juliet’s family) are having a big party and masked ball. How are people being invited? They have a servant go and tell the people.
What problem does the Capulet servant have with the invitation list? He doesn’t know how to read the list.
How do Romeo and Benvolio learn about the Capulet’s ball? What do they decide to do? The servant asked the two guys how to read the invitation list. They decide to go because Roselyn is on the invite list.
Why does Romeo want to go to the ball? Because Roselyn is on the list.
Why does Benvolio encourage Romeo to go to the ball? To see if he can meet someone else
Why shouldn’t Romeo attend the ball? Because he’s from the Montague family and they are not welcome at the Capulet’s house.
What happens at midnight during a masked ball (also called a masquerade ball)? You take off your mask and reveal your identity.
Why does Lady Capulet want to talk to her daughter Juliet? She’s encouraging Juliet to marry Paris.
How does Juliet feel about getting married? She doesn’t want to get married yet.
How old is Juliet? What is Lammastide? On what date does it come? She is 13 years old. Lammastide is a harvest festival and August 1st
What feelings do Juliet and the Nurse have for each other? Mother / daughter relationship. The nurse raised her.
Would Paris be a good “catch” for Juliet? Why? He would on paper but she’s not sold for Paris. They barley know each other.
To what does Lady Capulet compare Paris? She says that he’s so wonderful. Compares him to a book, flower, etc.
What is the relationship between mother and daughter in this scene? They aren’t getting along very well.
How does Juliet react to the idea of her parents arranging a marriage for her to Paris? She’s not that enthusiastic about it.
Describe the “Nurse” character. What kind of woman is she? She’s like a drunken fool. She’s funny, silly and talks too much.
Describe Juliet’s mother, Lady Capulet. What kind of woman is she? She seems to not be very loving to Juliet. She’s very serious and controlling.
When and where does this scene take place? act 1 scene IV At night, at the ball.
Explain Romeo’s speech. How is it related to the prologue? He has a speech about his feelings towards Juliet. The same thing happens in the prologue
At the end of Scene IV, what does Romeo fear? that they won’t be able to marry each other.
What is Capulet’s major concern for his guests at his party? To have fun, dance and enjoy the party.
Why does Tybalt become so upset, and how does Capulet respond to his rage? He becomes upset because he found out Romeo crashed the Capulet’s party but Capulet said that it’s okay because he doesn’t want fighting at his ball.
Describe the character Tybalt. What kind of man does he appear to be? He has a very bad temper. He’s always ready to fight.
“is she a Capulet? 0 dear account, my life is my foe’s debt.” Romeo
“My only love sprung from my only hate.” Juliet
Does Romeo know who Juliet is when he first sees her and falls in love? No.
Quote Juliet’s reaction when she learns Romeo’s identity (type at least two lines). What does this mean? “My only love sprung from my only hate” Of all the people she’d have love of first sight with, she didn’t think it would be him.
