The Great Gatsby: Study Questions Ch6

1. What was Gatsby’s real name? Why and when did he change it? Gatsby’s real first name was “Jimmy Gatz”, but later changed it to “Jay Gatsby”. He changed it because he wanted a new identity to reflect his new lifestyle. He thought the name “Jimmy Gatz was lower-class.
2. In what way was Dan Cody involved in Gatsby’s destiny? Gatsby and Dan Cody met when Gatsby was 17 years old. When Gatsby saw Dan’s yacht drop anchor at a dangerous point in Lake Superior, Gatsby saw an opportunity to leave his old life behind.
3. Why does Tom attend Gatsby’s party? How does this scene reveal contrast between Tom and Gatsby? Tom’s attendance at Gatsby’s party is to try and ruin Gatsby. Since Tom is from East Egg, he talks down on Gatsby’s party and has no connection with Gatsby.
4. What is deeply ironic in Tom’s statement, “…I may be old fashioned in my ideas, but women run around too much these days to suit me?” Despite the fact that (as far as Tom knows) Daisy’s “running around” has only amounted to knowing Gatsby, Tom himself is the champion of “running around,” having had affairs with various women, including Mrs. Wilson earlier in the book.
5. Note the reactions of Tom and Daisy at different times during Gatsby’s party. Did they enjoy themselves? Explain. When Tom and Daisy attend the party, Tom is awfully rude throughout the whole evening. After the Buchanan’s leave, Gatsby is crestfallen that Daisy didn’t enjoy herself. He doesn’t know that Tom was the one who upset her by saying he earns his money illegally.
6. What suspicions does Tom have about Gatsby? What does he vow to do? Tom’s suspicions of Gatsby is thinking he’s some criminal or big bootlegger that throws lavish parties with “new money”. He vows to track down information on him.
7. What do Nick and Gatsby talk about after the party? After the party, Gatsby talks to Nick about Daisy. He tells Nick that he wants Daisy to leave Tom and marry him and go back to Louisville with him.
8. What is Gatsby expecting of Daisy that prompts Nick to warn him, “I wouldn’t ask too much of her… You can’t repeat the past?” Gatsby wants Daisy to leave her life with Tom for him and repeat the past but with Gatsby.
