Notice how many times Fitzgerald uses the words hope or dream. Why does he do this? He does this to fortify or present one the principle subjects of the novel. One of the real things that this novel is about is the American Dream. Its about individuals and their dreams of getting ahead.
Nick starts the novel by relaying his father’s advice: “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” List Nick’s advantages. Does he reserve judgement in the novel? Nick’s a young man from Minnesota who’s just been educated at Yale. He comes from an upper middle class background. He doesn’t have to worry about budgeting his money, where most people have to nowadays.
Pay attention to time. What is the day and year during the first scene at Daisy’s house? It’s somewhere between June 6-8, 1922. Daisy notes that in 11 days, it’ll be the longest day of the year.
Describe Nick. What facts do you know about him?what facts do we know about his family? What kind of narrator do you think he’ll be? Nick originates from a conspicuous family and is genuinely smart where he moved on from Yale. He seems to be kind and a non – judgmental individual. I think he will recount the story sincerely and from a defended view.
What image does the author use to describe Jordan Baker? what does it mean? The author causes the reader to see Jordan as a cardboard figure who outwardly walks the “fine line” of old money society.
How does Nick react to Jordan? Nick finds himself attracted to Jordan Baker. His description of her is physical.
What does Tom’s behavior reveal about his character? Tom is aggressive, domineering and loud. Tom’s racism is jut another example of his very superficial, entitled and just hateful personality.
What does the following sentence reveal about Daisy and Miss Bake: “Sometimes she and Miss Baker talk at once, unobtrusively and with a bantering in consequence that was never quite chatter, that was as cool as their white dresses and their impersonal eyes in the absence of desire”.(17) No matter how weird the moment was, there was never an awkward moment that ruined their conversations.
Why does Fitzgerald include the comment about the butler’s nose? TO signify his current job, the butler used to be a silver polisher for a family in New York. He had to quit after a while, because it bothered his nose.
*Explain the significance of the following quote: “I’m glad its a girl, And I hope that she’ll be a fool , that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”.(22) Daisy says these words when talking about her hopes for her infant daughter. Instead of wishing for her to be intelligent she wishes her to be a fool and says that’s the only way a girl can be happy in this world. The quote portrays how the social environment in which they are in wants to see women.
How is Gatsby introduced at the end of the chapter? Gatsby is first introduced in conversation by Jordan Baker. After learning that Nick Carraway lives in west Egg, he sometime later remarked that he knew a man who lived there, Gatsby. Also, Nick tells the readers that he didn’t have the chance to tell the group that Gatsby was his neighbor.
