The Great Gatsby Study Guide Chapter 3

Describe Gatsby’s wealth. List some of the things that represent or symbolize his wealth. Huge mansion, lavish parties, plane, library, two motor boats, Rolls-Royce (luxury car), station wagon, 8 servants, caterers, gardeners, butlers, huge amounts of decadent food for his parties/guests
What kind of people come to Gatsby’s parties? Anybody: people from East and West egg, young Englishmen, his few guests that he occasionally personally invites (Nick), famous people, people who don’t even know Gatsby and weren’t invited (the went there, ended up at Gatsby’s door, someone who knew Gatsby would introduce them sometimes not, and then they would party)
Why did Nick Carraway, specifically, attend the party? Nick Carraway was personally invited by Gatsby to the party. A chauffeur in a uniform of robin’s-egg blue crossed his lawn early Saturday morning with a formal note from his employer that said, “The honor would be entirely Gatsby’s, if I would attend his “little party.”
Summarize how Nick meets Gatsby. Nick starts a conversation with him not knowing it’s actually Gatsby. A man came up to him and said “Your face is familiar,” and asked him if he had been in the Third Division during the war. Nick tells him he was in the ninth machine-gun battalion and the stranger responds and says he was in the Seventh Infantry. They made small talk about a wet, gray little village in France and the stranger talked about how he had just purchased a hydroplane. Then the stranger asks Nick if he wants to go with him tomorrow. Jordan pulls Nick away and Nick tells the stranger that he hasn’t even seen the host Gatsby and that he is actually the neighbor next door. Than the stranger announces that he actually is Gatsby.
What are some of the stories about Gatsby? *He was a German spy during the war *He killed a man
Is Gatsby a “phony”? Yes Gatsby is a phony. He has a lot of parties that he does not even enjoy or participate in and that aren’t even for him or the people who show up (which often times he doesn’t even know)- they are for Daisy.
Describe Nick’s relationship with Jordan. Nick met Jordan in the first chapter and found her very attractive. Nick is intrigued with her and occasionally thinks he’s in love, but they aren’t in love. Although he is attracted to her, Nick has a relationship to end back home before he can become involved with her because he is an honest individual (which is different from Jordan’s ethics and her dishonesty). Nick likes Jordan’s openness about her character attractive like when he criticized her driving.
