Chapter One
How does the narrator describe Gatsby? Gatsby was romantic with lots of hope, something gorgeous about him, a romantic readiness.
From where did the narrator come and why? Graduated from New Haven, from the Midwest. Came to the East to study bond and business.
Describe the narrator’s house. Less fashionable, squeezed in between two large places, an eyesore, small, overlooked, and weather beaten.
Describe the Buchanans’ house. A mansion, it is very formal and traditional.
How does Nick know Daisy and Tom? Daisy is Nick’s cousin, he knew Tom from school.
Describe Tom. Athletic, arrogant, and snobby.
What kind of person is Daisy? Very superficial and a socialite yearning for love.
What did Miss Baker tell Nick about Tom? That Tom was having an affair.
When asked about her daughter, what does Daisy say? That she hopes that she is a beautiful little fool, because that is the best thing a girl can be in this world.
How is Gatsby introduced into the novel? In conversation, then later Nick sees him out on the Lawn in the moonlight.
Chapter Two
What is the “Valley of Ashes”? An industrial zone on the way to the city, wealthy neighborhoods of Gatsby and the Buchanans.
What are the “eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg”? They are on a billboard close to George Wilsons garage, near the Valley of Ashes.
Who did Tom take Nick to meet? Myrtle, Tom’s mistess.
Identify Myrtle and George Wilson. Myrtle Wilson is Tom’s Mistress. George is her husband.
What did Mrs. Wilson buy while she was out with Tom and Nick? She bought a copy of “Town tatle”, a moving picture magazine, cold creme, perfume, and more notably, a dog.
Where did they go? What was at 158ᵗʰ Street? 158ᵗʰ Street. The apartment that was for Tom and Myrtle’s meetings.
Identify Catherine and Mr. & Mrs. McKee. Catherine is Myrtle’s sister and Mr. & Mrs. McKee live downstairs at the apartment complex.
What does Mr. McKee tell Nick about Gatsby? That Gatsby is the nephew of Kaiser Wilhelm.
What reason did Myrtle give for marrying George Wilson? She thought he was a gentleman, but she regretted marrying him when she found out he borrowed his wedding tuxedo from someone else.
What did Tom do to Myrtle when she mentioned Daisy’s name? He broke her nose.
Chapter Three
Describe Gatsby’s wealth. List some of the things that represent wealth. His wealth was inherited.
What kind of people come to Gatsby’s parties? Newly-rich and famous people and all their friends.
Why did Nick Carraway go to the party? Nick went to Gatsby’s party because he got an invite and wanted to know his strange and elusive neighbor better.
How does Nick meet Gatsby? He starts a conversation with him, without knowing it’s Gatsby.
What are some of the stories about Gatsby? He is the cousin of a prince, has killed someone, or isn’t even real.
Is Gatsby a “phony”? Yes because he has a lot of parties that he doesn’t even enjoy and that aren’t even for him or the people who show up, they are for Daisy.
Describe Nick’s relationship with Jordan. It is just a friendship.
Chapter Four
Who is Klipspringer? He is the “boarder,” someone who always seems to be at Gatsby’s house.
What does Gatsby tell Nick about himself? Gatsby tells Nick that he was educated at Oxford, was the son of some wealthy people in the Middle East, his wealthy family died, he inherited their money, and when the war came, he got some medals. He showed Nick the medals and a picture of himself with his college mates.
What “matter” did Gatsby have Jordan Baker discuss with Nick? Having Daisy over for tea at Nick’s.
Who is Mr. Wolfshiem? He was the one who rigged (fixed) the World Series.
What does Mr. Wolfshiem tell Nick about Gatsby? He said that Gatsby was the kind of man you’d like to take home and introduce to your mother and your sister.
What does Jordan tell Nick about Daisy, Gatsby, and Tom? She tells him that Daisy and Gatsby had a romance before him.
Chapter Five
Describe the meeting between Gatsby and Daisy. Why was he so nervous? The meeting was very akward at first because they had not seen each other in years and she remembered her past love with Gatsby.
How long did it take Gatsby to make the money to buy the mansion? It took him 3 years.
Why did Gatsby want Daisy to see the house and his clothes? He wanted to show off his wealth and prove to her that he could give her the lifestyle she always wanted with him.
What had the green light on the dock meant to Gatsby? It stood for his vision of his fuure with Daisy.
What had Gatsby turned Daisy into in his own mind? He had turned her into an illusion of what they had and what they/she used to be.
Chapter Six
What is Gatsby’s real history? Where is he from, and what is his name? He grew up poor, his name is James Gatz, and he is from North Dakota.
What did Dan Cody do for Gatsby? Because of Dan, Gatsby changed his name. He left to travel with Cody until his death afterwich he inhereted a large sum of money but didn’t get it. Cody educated Gatsby on money.
What is Daisy’s opinion of Gatsby’s party? How does this affect him? Daisy thinks that his party is too much, like an amusement park.
What does Gatsby want from Daisy? He wants her to admit to Tom that she never loved him and he wants her to leave Tom for him.
Chapter Seven
What was Gatsby’s reaction to Daisy’s child? He looks at her with surprise.
What did Wilson do to Myrtle? Why? Wilson locked Myrtle in her room until they are able to get away from the area. He suspects she is having an affair.
Why do the five drive into the city on such a hot afternoon? Daisy says, “It’s so hot and everything’s so confused. Let’s go to town.” She wants to change the subject and not have a confrontation between Tom and Gatsby.
What does Gatsby think about Daisy’s relationship with Tom? He truly believes that she never did love him.
What is Daisy’s reaction to both men? She is obviously torn. She wants the escape that Gatsby provides, but she recognizes that a permanent relationship with him would not work.
What happens on the way home from New York? Myrtle crashes.
How do these people react to Myrtle’s death? [ Wilson, Tom, Nick, Gatsby ] Wilson feels guilty as though he is responsible for her having the affair. Tom’s first instinct is to protect himself by telling Wilson that the yellow car was not his. Nick feels sick and wants to be left alone. Gatsby is concerned for Daisy.
What is the true relationship between Daisy and Tom? They are birds of a feather. Daisy is a fairly weak person and tom is very domineering but they are both “careless” people. Neither one takes responsbility for his own actions.
Chapter Eight
What does Gatsby tell Nick about his past? Is it true? He says he met Daisy and fell in love with her, but he couldn’t take care of her. He went to the war and then to Oxford, but Daisy wanted him to come home. Daisy, under pressure to marry, married Tom. Yes, it is true.
What does Michaelis believe caused Myrtle to run? He thinks she was running away from Wilson.
Why did she run? She thought Tom was in the yellow car because she had seen him in it earlier. She was running towards Tom.
Why does Wilson believe that Gatsby killed Myrtle? Because it was Gatsby’s yellow car.
What does Wilson do? He kills Gatsby and then himself.
Chapter Nine
Why couldn’t Nick get anyone to come to Gatsby’s funeral? Gatsby had no close friends, all of the party people were too shallow to even meet him, Tom and Daisy had gone out of town, and Wolfshiem was so shady he couldn’t be seen at a funeral of someone who had been murdered.
Who is Henry C. Gatz? He is Gatsby’s father.
What is the book Henry Gatz shows Nick? Why is it important to the novel? It is a copy of Hopalong Cassidy with one of Gatsby’s personal schedules in it. It shows Gatsby’s planning, his desire to work to get ahead, and his spirit for romantic adventure.
What happens between Nick and Jordan Baker? Nick breaks off the relationship. He just can’t stand the ease with which she (and Tom and Daisy) let things slip by. They are too irresponsible for his moral sensibilities.
What does Nick say about people like Daisy and Tom? He says they were careless.
