The Great Gatsby Character Analysis

Nick Caraway The narrator, whom lives in West Egg and neighbors with Mr. Gatsby. Works with bonds on Wall street. Second cousins with Daisy Buchanan. Characterizes himself as an honest man.
Tom Buchanan Comes from old money, inherits it and moves from east to west. Last location settled was East Egg. Husband of Daisy, and Nicks friend from Yale. Defined as a toned muscular aggressive man that is in comparison to Zeus. Has an affair with a woman in New York named Myrtle Wilson.
Daisy Buchanan Nicks second cousin and spouse of Tom. Had a relationship with Jay Gatsby years ago in Louisville before the War. Comes from old money as well as Tom. Characterized as cynical and sardonic.
Jay Gatsby Protagonist of the novel. Creates an improvised version of himself. Sells illegal things and finds himself in the ellipse of time. Long lover os Daisy Buchanan, he desperately finds reasons to woo her. Later in the novel Nick finds out Jays real identify. A young boy from no money named James Gatz. Nick views Gatsby as a deeply flawed man, dishonest and vulgar, whose extraordinary optimism and power to transform his dreams into reality make him “great” nonetheless. Tragically gets shot in the end by Mr Wilson, for Gatsby was innocent.
Owl Eyes A drunk whom Nick meets at the first party he attends at Gatsby’s mansion. Points out that Gatsby’s collection of books are real but have not been read creating an allusion that he is educated.
Jordan Baker Daisy’s friend and Nicks short love. Famous golfer and Nick characterizes her as not an honest woman. Also can be known as self-centered, boyish, and cynical.
Dan Cody Millionaire and friend of Jay Gatsby who he sailed with for 5 years.
Myrtle Wilson Young woman who has an affair with Tom Buchanan. Tom treats her as a mere object of his desire. Also the spouse of Mr Wilson who owns a garage. She looks for money and wants to improve her situation. Often repeats the phrase, “You can’t live forever.
Mr. Wilson Myrtle’s husband, the lifeless, exhausted owner of a run-down auto shop at the edge of the valley of ashes.
Meyer Wolfsheim Works with Gatsby in crime. Helped Gatsby to make his fortune bootlegging illegal liquor.
