Daisy & Tom escape from their problems with their money.
How does Daisy react when she finds out how Gatsby earns his money? She withdraws from Gatsby.
“It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such – such beautiful shirts before.” Daisy- realizes that he did it all for her.
“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . Nick-This shows Gatsby’s American Dream and the struggle that it has created for him. He can never repeat the past.
“Can’t repeat the past?… Why of course you can!” Gatsby- wants to recapture his dream of life with Daisy.
“After Gatsby’s death the East was haunted for me like that, distorted beyond my eyes’ power of correction. So when the blue smoke of brittle leaves was in the air and the wind blew the wet laundry stiff on the line I decided to come back home.” Nick- the East becomes this place for him that reminds him how they have no morals.
“He thinks she goes to see her sister in New York. He’s so dumb he doesn’t know he’s alive.” Tom- comments on George Wilson. Shows Tom’s arrogance.
“It takes two to make an accident.” Jordan- shows how careless she is.
“Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.” Nick- believes that he’s honest, but he’s not so honest in the East.
