What is the reason for cattle roaming and overgrown crops in Salem? So many people are either in jail (or dead) because they’ve been accused of witchcraft, so they are unable to take care of their property.
Who else does Proctor name as a witch? No one; he says he never saw another person with the devil.
Why does Danforth summon Elizabeth Proctor? The Proctor’s haven’t seen each other in 3 months, and Danforth thinks she can convince Proctor to confess to witchcraft.
Why does Danforth bring Rebecca Nurse in to witness Proctor confess? He believes that if she sees Proctor confess, it will motivate her to confess, too.
Why does Proctor REFUSE to allow the signed confession be posted on the church door? His reputation is the most important (and only) thing that he has left. He wants to keep his reputation clean.
Does Elizabeth convince John Proctor to confess to witchcraft? No; she says it is HIS choice and whatever decision he makes, a good man will be making that decision.
Elizabeth apologizes to Proctor when they’re alone together…why? She believes that it was partly her fault he had an affair. She apologizes for being a “cold” woman.
Why does Rev. Parris want Deputy Danforth to postpone the hangings? Parris believes that a riot will begin in the town if more people are hanged. He is afraid.
