Romeo and Juliet turning point essay – Higher English

Introduction-TAGL ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a play written by William Shakespeare in which a key scene provides a turning point in the story. In the beginning, love is succeeding over hate but in Act 3 this changes dramatically to tragedy.
Paragraph 1.1 Prior to Act 3 the theme of love is battling the hate between Montague and Capulet. Romeo and Juliet have fallen in love despite the feud.
Paragraph 1.2 – possible quotes “O she doth teach torches to burn bright!” – RomeoShows his love for Juliet.”Prodigious birth of love it is to me that I must love a loathed enemy” – JulietKnows who Romeo is but still loves him anyway.
Continued “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”Compares Romeo to a rose and again shows she doesn’t care about his name.
Paragraph 1.3 We are hopeful that things will continue to go well for Romeo and Juliet, that young love will win against blind hate.
Paragraph 2.1 However, things go horribly wrong beginning with the death of Romeo’s friend, Mercutio. The first notable death. He is killed by Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt. Romeo gets carried away and avenges Mercutio’s death by killing Tybalt. As a result, Romeo is banished.
Paragraph 2.2 – possible quotes “Ha, Banishment! Be merciful, say ‘death'”Romeo is so distraught he would rather be dead than away from Juliet. “Beautiful tyrant! Fiend angelical!” Even Juliet is shocked but forgives Romeo.
Paragraph 2.3 Romeo and Juliet are now prevented from being together, we are devastated by the drastic turn of events.
Paragraph 3.1 After this point, things only get worse. Capulet forces marraige on Juliet, who can’t say she is already married to Romeo in secret. Juliet must pretend to be dead to avoid it but news of the plan does not reach Romeo who promises to kill himself to be with her.
Paragraph 3.2 – possible quotes “He shall not make me there a joyful bride!”Juliet refuses marraige.”Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight” Romeo wants to be dead, things have gone very wrong.
Paragraph 3.3 We can barely believe how awful the situation has become and how quickly things have gone south.
Paragraph 4.1 At the very end of the play both Romeo and Juliet are dead. Juliet has stabbed herself after finding Romeo dead beside her.
Paragraph 4.2 – possible quotes “Thus with a kiss I die” Romeo takes his own life due to how terrible the situation now is.”O happy dagger! This is thy sheeth; there rust, and let me die” Juliet follows close behind her love, ending their story in a dramatic way.
Paragraph 4.3 We are shocked by the sheer tragedy that the story has come to.
Conlcusion To conclude, the turning point in Act 3 with the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt is what kicks off the series of tragic events ending with the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
Continued This ending of death brought on by hate is very different from the start of the play where love appears to be triumphant. This change is catalysed by the key scene of Tybalt’s end.
