Romeo and Juliet Study Questions

What does it mean that lovers are “star-crossed”? What is the effect of having the author (speaking through Chorus) give away the ending? According to the positions of the stars at their birth, two people were not meant to be together. The author says it ends in a tragedy; therefore they both die.
If the lovers are “star-crossed” can they be tragic figures? IF they are tragic figures, what do they themselves contribute to their downfall? They can be tragic figures. Knowing, they’re not meant to be, they fall in love anyway.
How do Samson and Gregory re-ignite the feud between he families? Why do we learn about the town and what is happening there? They encounter each other and have a fight. The town is used to the fighting, but innocent people are killed.
How do Old Capulet and Old Montague respond to the fighting? How do their wives respond? Old Capulet and Old Montague join in on the fight, while their wives try to stop them.
What is the Prince’s response to the fighting? Which side is he on? What does he threaten? The prince does not pick a side; he threatens to banish the next side he sees fighting.
Who is Romeo? Where has he been through all this, how has he been behaving, and what i bothering him when he appears? Romeo is the son of Old Montague. He is crying and depressed because this girl named Rosaline doesn’t love him back.
In the beginning of the play, who does Romeo love? What complication makes the woman he has chosen a less than perfect love object? Romeo is in love with Rosaline, but she does not love him back.
How old is Juliet? What is Capulet’s attitude toward Juliet’s marriage? Who wants to marry her? Why would he be considered a “good match” for her? Juliet is 13 years old. Her father thinks she is too young to marry, but Paris wants to marry her. Paris has a high social status and is rich.
What will happen that evening? Why is it important that we know this? That night the Capulets host a party. Juliet is introduce to Paris, and meets Romeo.
Why does Benvolio want Romeo to go to the feast? What does he think will happen? He wants Romeo to forget about Rosaline and meet someone new.
Why has Lady Capulet actually come to talk to Juliet? How old is Lady Capulet? Why is this important in their conversation with Juliet? Lady Capulet wants to set up Juliet and Paris. Lady Capulet is 27 years old. Her own marriage was probably arranged as well.
How does Juliet behave to her mother? Juliet does not want to marry Paris. She doesn’t promise anything to her mother, she just agrees to meet him.
How does Mercutio answer Romeo’s fears based on his dream? Note the role of dreams and visions throughout the play. What does the Queen Mab speech add to the play? What does it add to character of Mercutio? Mercutio dismisses Romeo’s fears and assures him that his dream will not come true.

Tybalt sees Romeo following Juliet, and asks Old Montague if he can attack him. In the future, there is going to be more conflict. Tybalt recognizes Romeo by his voice.
