Romeo and Juliet Scene Guides

Act 1-Prologue Chorus : Chorus tells the audience about the enemies who have been fighting for years, a pair of lovers who are doomed, and how their deaths will be the only thing that will end the fighting between the two families.
Act 1-Scene 1 (Verona-a public place) Sampson, Gregory, Abram, Benvolio, Tybalt, Montague, Lady Montague, Capulet, Lady Capulet, Prince, Romeo : A fight occurs, the prince arrives and decrees death to further fighting. Romeo is depressed and in love with a girl who doesn’t love him back. Benvolio tries to make him forget her.
Act 1-Scene 2 (a street) Capulet, Paris, Benvolio, Romeo, a servant : Paris asks for Juliet’s hand in marriage and Capulet says she’s too young to marry. Benvolio and Romeo learns of Capulet’s party from an illiterate servant and decide to crash it.
Act 1-Scene 3 (a room in Capulet’s house) Lady Capulet, Nurse, Juliet : Lady Capulet informs of Paris’s desire to marry Juliet. She doesn’t want marriage. Juliet agrees to meet him but promises nothing.
Act 1-Scene 4 (a street) Romeo, Benvolio, Mercutio : Boys head to Capulet party. Romeo is still depressed. Mercutio gives Queen Mab speech. Romeo reveals premonition that something bad is about to happen that will lead to his own death, but they head on anyways.
Act 1-Scene 5 (a hall in Capulet’s house) Capulet, Romeo, Tybalt, Juliet, Nurse : Tybalt identifies Romeo at the party and wants to fight, but Capulet holds him off. He vows revenge. Romeo falls in love at first sight with Juliet. They talk, kiss, and learn that their families are enemies.
Act 2-Scene 1 (a lane by the wall of the Capulet’s orchard) Benvolio, Mercutio : Searching for Romeo who doesn’t want to be found. They try to conjure him from the dark with descriptions of Rosaline.
Act 2-Scene 2 (Capulet’s orchard) Romeo, Juliet : Romeo jumps the orchard walls and Juliet appears. They decide to get married.
Act 2-Scene 3 (Friar Lawrence’s cell) Friar Lawrence, Romeo : Romeo goes to Friar to ask him to marry them. Friar agrees and hopes to bring peace to the families.
Act 2-Scene 4 (a street) Benvolio, Mercutio, Romeo : Boys are mad that Romeo ditched them. They exchange puns. Nurse arrives with information for the wedding. Romeo tells her it’s on and gives instructions.
Act 2-Scene 5 (Capulet’s orchard) Juliet, Nurse : Juliet patiently waiting for news, Nurse teases her and eventually tells her that wedding plans are on.
Act 3-Scene 6 (Friar Lawrene’s cell) Friar, Romeo, Juliet : Friar gives advice about marriage and they set off to marry.
Act 3-Scene 1 ( a public place) Tybalt starts a fight with Benvolio and Mercutio. Romeo tries to calm them and avoid fighting. Mercutio furiously attacks Tybat, Tybalt kills him. Romeo kills Tybalt. Romeo is banished by Prince.
Act 3-Scene 2 (Capulet’s orchard) Juliet and Nurse : Nurse tells Juliet about Tybalt’s death. Juliet is caught between her love for Romeo and loyalty to her cousin Tybalt. Juliet has the nurse take a ring to Romeo and arranges for them to meet before he must leave.
Act 3-Scene 3 (Friar Lawrence’s cell) Friar, Romeo, Nurse : Romeo seeks advice from Friar. Banishment is worse to Romeo than death. Nurse arrives, Friar urges Romeo to go to Juliet, but be gone to Mantua before sunrise and he’ll work out a plan.
Act 3-Scene 4 (a room in Capulet’s house) Capulet, Lady Capulet, Prince : Juliet’s already married. With a pending wedding, Romeo and Juliet have less time together and their plans may not work.
Act 3-Scene 5 (Capulet’s , orchard) Romeo, Juliet, Nurse, Lady Capulet, Capulet : Romeo and Juliet wake from their night together. Nurse warns Romeo to leave. Lady Capulet tells Juliet about her marriage; Juliet protests. Capulet threatens to disown her and Nurse betrays Juliet by telling her to marry Paris.
Act 4-Scene 1 (Friar Lawrence’s cell) Juliet, Paris, Friar : Juliet goes to Friar and says she’d rather die than marry Paris. Friar gives her a potion to appear dead and he sends a letter to Romeo revealing the plan.
Act 4-Scene 2 (hall in Capulet’s house) Capulet, Lady Capulet, Juliet : Wedding prep is being made; Juliet apologizes and pretends to obey order of marriage. Capulet is excited and moves the wedding up one day.
Act 4-Scene 3 (Juliet’s chamber) Lady Capulet and Juliet : Juliet realizes she must drink the potion. She doubts the friar’s intentions, but she drinks it anyways.
Act 4-Scene 4 (hall in Capulet’s house) Nurse, Lady Capulet, Capulet : Wedding prep is underway and everyone’s in a good mood.
Act 4-Scene 5 (Juliet’s chamber) Nurse, Lady Capulet, Capulet, Friar : Final prep is being made for wedding and they discover Juliet’s body. Wedding now becomes a funeral.
Act 5-Scene 1 (Mantua, a street) Romeo, Balthasar, Apothecary : Romeo learns that Juliet is “dead” and wants to die. with her. He goes to the apothecary and buys illegal poison to die in tomb with Juliet.
Act 5-Scene 2 (Friar Lawrence’s cell) Friar John, Friar Lawrence : Friar Lawrence finds out Romeo never received the letter. The messenger was quarantined in a house suspected of the plague.
Act 5-Scene 3 (churchyard, tomb belonging to the Capulets) Paris, Romeo, Prince, Balthasar, Friar, Juliet, Capulet, Lady Capulet, Montague : Paris goes to mourn Juliet and thinks Romeo is there to desecrate the tomb. Romeo kills Paris and sees Juliet “dead”. He drinks poison and dies, as the Friar arrives. Juliet wakes up and refuses to leave; Friar leaves without her. Juliet stabs herself with his dagger and kills herself. Families arrives and Friar confesses, displaying Romeo’s suicide note. Montague vows to raise a gold statue of Juliet in their honor. The families finally make peace.
