Romeo and Juliet – Mr. Mentz

(Act 1 – Scene 1) “Here is much to do with hate, but more with love,Why then,O brawling love, O loving hate,Of anything, of nothing first create!…” These contrasting ideas and feelings expressed by Romeo reveal that he is disappointed with love because his feelings are not how he expected to feel. He expected to feel light, bright and warm, but instead he feels heavy dark and cold. Love is tormenting him and making him miserable rather than happy and good. Maybe he is too young and naive and has no control over his feelings so they have gotten the best of him because he is immature.
(I Scene 2) My child is yet a stranger in the world. She hath not seen the change of fourteen years.Let two more summers wither in their prideEre we may think her ripe to be a bride. Capulet is explaining to Paris that Juliet is still very young and that they should wait two summers, then see if she’s old enough for marriage.
(I Scene 2) “Younger are she are happy mothers made.” This is Paris’ argument, meaning girls even younger than Juliet get married, have babies and become happy mothers.
(I Scene 2) “And too soon marred are those so early made.” What Capulet means by this is girls that marry too young, then grow up way too soon.
(I Scene 2) “At my poor house look to behold tonight earth-treading stars that make dark heaven light…” Capulet’s is saying that tonight at his humble home there will be young women that radiate such beauty, they will resemble stars reflecting light from the earth.
(I Scene 2) “Such comfort as do lusty young men feel when well-apparelled April on the heel of limping Winter treads…” Capulet still telling Paris: This means the men will feel revived and refreshed at seeing all the beautiful youthful women at Capulet’s house.
(I Scene 2) “…and if you be not of the house of Montagues, I pray come and crush a cup of wine.” (Peter the servant is saying this) This means, if you are not related to the Montagues, please come join us for a drink of wine.
(I Scene 4) I am too sore enpiercèd with his shaftTo soar with his light feathers, and so bound,I cannot bound a pitch above dull woe. Under love’s heavy burden do I sink. His arrow has pierced me too deeply, so I can’t fly high with his cheerful feathers. Because this wound keeps me down, I can’t leap any higher than my dull sadness. I sink under the heavy weight of love. THis means: Romeo is in a state of depression because he feels heartbroken, rejected by Rosalind’s. He can’t have any fun because he doesn’t believe he can get over his heartache.
(I Scene 4) “I fear, too early, for my mind misgives some consequence, yet hanging in the stars, shall bitterly begin, his fearful date with this night’s revels and expire term of a despised life, closed in my breast, by some vile forfeit of untimely death.” This quote shows that Romeo has a strange premonition that fore shadows his death. He suddenly fears his death and believe by entering the party he will be doomed.
(I Scene 4) “But he that has the steerage of my course direct my sail.” This quote shows that Romeo believes that his fate is not in his own hands, and he has no control over what is to be.
(I Scene 5) “…Verona brags him to be virtuous and well-governed youth. I would not for the wealth of all this town here in my house do him disparagement. Capulet is talking about Romeo. He is saying that Romeo has a good reputation in Verona. He is virtuous and well behaved. Capulet would not insult him in his own house for all the money in town.
(I Scene 5) “Patience perforce with willful choler meeting makes my flesh tremble in their difference greeting.” Tybalt is saying that he is forced to be patient, and this combined with his choler (anger) is enraging him.
(I Scene 5) “…If he be married, my grave is like to be my wedding bed.” Juliet is saying that if Romeo is married, she’d most likely die before she marries another.
(I Scene 5) “My only love, sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late!” Juliet is saying that the only man she loves is the son of the only man she hates. She saw him before she knew who he was, and then, found out too late.
