“Loving hate” and “heavy lightness” Oxymorons. We feel light when we know we are happy but also feel heavy knowing the happiness will end. Romeo uses these words to describe love?
Benvolio- Alas that love, so gentle in his view. Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof Love at first sight isnt what it seems, love is blinding and hides the truth
Romeo- “Alas that love, whose view is muffled still” Relates to how blind love is, random and cant be controlled (blindfolded cupid)Love can control people
Romeo- ” a choking gall, and a preserving sweet” Love is a sweet candy you can choke on – (someghing bad from something good) Says love is a choking poison and healing sweet, contradiction shows two sides of love and the range of affect
“Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health” Opposites- shows that love is full of opposites and cannot be understood, how can love (good) cause people to kill and be violent?
Romeo: “In sadness, cousin, I do love a woman” Romeo is being sarcastic
“She’s fair I love” First thing mentioned is her physical appearance, shows he doesnt know her and just loves her physically and the idea of her
“Is soonest hit” Benvolio says pretty ones are the soonest “hit”. Talk about women as if they are a target, objectifying them
