Romeo and Juliet: Act 1 Scene 5 Quotes

“she doth teach the torches to burn bright!” Romeo’s reaction to when he first see’s Juliet at the feast, he relates Juliet to that of light and brightness compared to the dark surroundings to almost enhance her angelic features and beauty. He calls her ‘As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear’
“For i ne’er saw true beauty till this night” Romeo has completely forgotten about his love for Rosaline as he has seen, almost like a child, a newer and in this case more glorious girl to lay his eyes upon. His language is very poetic as he conveys the lightness of the world with Juliets beauty to show his feelings.
“Fetch me my rapier, boy” Tybalt’s character after having only heard the sound of Romeo’s voice is willimg to resort to violence after having not even thought about it. This immediate fall to anger and vengeance shows the audience that Tybalt is the villian of the play.
“I’ll not endure him! …He shall be endured” Tybalt forcefully declares his anguish to Lord Capulet who in fact respectively dismisses his nephew as having heard Romeo to be a ‘virtous and well-governed youth’. Capulet clearly does not want to fight, but most of all he doesnt want Tybalt to ‘make a mutiny among my guests’. ( disturbance )
“convert to bitterest gall!” We learn in this scene how Tybalt wants his revenge upon Romeo for firstly intruding at his families feast, but mostly for the missed fued that would have happened at the feast for if it wasnt because of Capulet wanting to keep peace. The fact Capulet shut down Tybalts fiery attitude almost insults his pride; making him only wanting to fight back more
“O trespass sweetly urged!” Romeo says to Juliet how she has encouraged this sin of them kissing very sweetly, therefore it was not only Ro.ro who wanted to kiss her, it was Juliet also.
“You kiss by the book” Juliet sweetly tells Romeo he kisses like an expert, showing their very early relationship and how innocent it is, that is until the secrets of the play unfold.
“My life is my foe’s debt” Romeo realises what a heavy price he will have to pay to be with Juliet, he says his whole life now is in the power of the Capulet’s, his families enemy.
“My grave is like to be my wedding bed” After Romeo leaves, Juliet asks her nurse to find his name and details, and declares to herself that if he be married to someone already, she will have no other hope in finding another man to marry hence why he grave will be her wedding bed.
“My only love sprung from my only hate.” Juliet too has the same reaction as Romeo when finding they are from fueding families; her first and what she see’s as her only ever love, of course had to be complicated by her lover being from the opposing family. However she does comically say ‘Prodigious birth of love it is to me’ showing that it is a very omnious start to their love.
