Romeo and Juliet Act 1 Review

Sampson and Gregory servants who are on the Capulet’s side.
Abraham servant on the Montague’s side.
What does Benvolio try to do? stop the fight happening between the Capulets and the Montagues.
Who is Tybalt and who and what does he hate? Juliets cousin who hates peace, the Montagues and Benvolio.
The Prince breaks it up, and threatens to kill anyone if they do not listen to him.
The Montagues are worried about Romeo and whats wrong with him.
What does Benvolio find out about Romeo? He finds out the Romeo is in love with a girl who is opposed to marriage and love.
What does he propose he do and what is Romeo’s response? tells Romeo to stop thinking about the girl. He tells him to look for someone else and that there are plenty of other fish in the sea basically. Romeo responds that it wouldn’t help and that no one could compare to the girl he is in love with and that he would just like to be alone and sad.
Scene 1 Summary During this scene two servants start a physical fight with a Montague (who their master hates), it becomes very violent and blood is spilt with many weapons being used. The Prince threatens to kill anyone who participates in another fight, he breaks the fight up. Romeo, who is not participating in the fight is off depressed about being in love with a girl who will never love him back, and his cousin tries to convince him that there are other girls out there but he wont think about it.
“From forth the fatal loins of these two foes / A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” Chorous says this in prologue Means: : Two Children born from different families who hate eachother fall in love and end up taking their lives.
“If ever you disturb our streets again, / Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace.” Prince says thisMeans: : If you ever fight again you will loose your lives and people will be able to regain peace.
Paris wants to marry juiliet
What is Capulet’s response and what is he worried about? That Juliet is too young and would like Paris to wait two years. Juliets consenst will make Capulet give consense.
What does Capulet suggest Paris do? He suggests that Paris comes to the party and tries to win her over.
Romeo describes himself as a torchered prison.
Who is the girl Romeo is interested in, and what relation is she to Capulet? Rosaline who is a capulet
Scene 2 Summary Paris wants to marry Juliet and his father says that he needs Juliet to want him back. He tells him to come to the party and woo her over. The serving man is meant to invite people from the list but he cant read English so he gets help from Romeo ( very sad) and asks him to the party.
“My will to her consent is but a part.” Capulet says this
Act 1Scene 3 This scene starts with Juliet’s mother (Lady Capulet) and her Nurse (basically a nanny) coming in to talk to her. The Nurse is someone who loooooooves to talk, so she keeps rambling on about how she has known Juliet forever, she can’t believe that she is old enough to get married, etc.Lady Capulet asks how Juliet feels about being married and tells Juliet that when she was her age (thirteen) she had already had Juliet! She then tells Juliet that the reason she is asking is because Paris, one of the richest and most handsome men, wants to marry her. She says that tonight will be Juliet’s chance to check Paris out and see if he is interested since he is a good match.
Juliet Says “I’ll look to like, if looking liking move; / But no more deep will I endart mine eye / Than your consent gives strength to make it fly.” meaning:that she will look at Paris when he is at the party but she cannot guarantee that she will fall in love with him.
Scene 4 Summary In this scene, Romeo, Mercutio, Benvolio and a few of their other friends are hanging around, waiting to go “crash” the Capulet’s party. Romeo is moping; remember he is sad that Rosaline doesn’t love him. They suggest that Romeo needs to dance and have fun, but he just keeps saying that he is too sad to enjoy himself.Romeo finally tells him that he also feels a bit worried because he had a dream that bothered him.According to the legends, whenever you have a dream it is because Queen Mab has driven her little firy car over you. So if you are a lawyer, she drives her car over your hand and you dream of counting money. Mercutio wants Romeo to forget his dream and he does when he says basically “ok I had a bad feeling about this but let’s go to the party.”We, of course know, he was right! He should be worried about going to this party and it WILL lead to his early death!
“for my mind misgives / Some consequence yet hanging in the stars / Shall bitterly begin his fearful date / With this night’s revels, and expire the term / Of a despisèd life closed in my breast / By some vile forfeit of untimely death.” Romeo says this
“She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes / In shape no bigger than an agate stone.” Mercutio says this
Mercutio rather unsympathetic to Romeos problem, seeming fuffn loving but carefree to the point of being a bit dangerous.
Why does Romeo not want to go to the party? He has a dream that something bad would happen and cause him to die.
Queen Mab. the dream giving queen of fairies who rides areound in an empty hazelnut chariot and dances over mens noses as they lie asleep.
Scene 4 Summary Continued Mercutio is trying to convince Romeo to come to the party and he talks about how he as a bad feeling about this due to a dream he had.
How does Romeo describe Juliet? as a true beauty, and that she outshines bright, hangs upon the cheek of night like a rich jewel in Ethiop’ ear”
How does Tybalt react when he hears Romeo? is angry, wants to kill him because he believes that Romeo is disrespecting his family. He vows to get him.
Capulet responds with “No don’t ruin my party, you better listen to, I am in charge and I tell you Romeo should be ingnored- he has a good reputiation in town and his a good kid” This shows Capulet is a good guy too
Describe the metaphor that Romeo uses when first speaking to Juliet That she is a shrine and should be worshipped.
What does he convince her to do? He convinces her to kiss him
What does Juliet say to convince Romeo to return the favor? “You gave me all of my sins, take them back” is what she said.
Scene 5 Summary The party happens in which Romeo attends. This angers Tybalt but Capulet is chill with it, saying he is a good person and that he can carry on at the party. Romeo and Juliet meet, and flirt religiously and end up kissing, but the nurse finds out that he is a mountague and this angers Juliet.
