What advice does Benvolio give Romeo about Rosaline? He says to forget her and find another.
What decree does the Prince make after the street brawl? The next time there was trouble the penalty for the offender would be death.
Scene 2
How does Capulet respond to Paris’ proposal to marry Juliet? He says she is too young.
How do Romeo and Benvolio learn about the Capulet’s ball? What do they decide to do? A servant of Lord Capulet asks for their help in reading the names on the invitation list. They decide to go to the party.
Scene 3
How does Juliet feel about getting married? She has mixed feelings. She wants to be in love with the man she marries but knows her marriage will probably be arranged and she must be obedient. Also, she thinks maybe she’s too young
How old is Juliet? What is Lammastide? On what date does it come? Juliet is about to turn 14. Lammastide is a celebration of the harvest and it happens on August 1st.
Scene 4
When and where does this scene take place? Outside the Capulet house before the party.
Explain Romeo’s speech (lines 106-113). Romeo is saying he has a feeling that the night will start a series of events that will lead to his untimely death. (Foreshadowing)
Scene 5
Where does this scene take place? Inside the Capulet house during the party.
Who is Romeo talking about in lines 46-55? Explain the irony in these lines. He is talking about Juliet. The irony is that the love of Romeo and Juliet seems to burn too brightly to last in the everyday world, and Romeo’s very first speech about Juliet contains that idea.
Why does Tybalt become so upset, and how does Capulet respond to his rage? Tybalt is upset because a member of their enemy’s family has come to the party uninvited. Capulet does not want any trouble at the party and tells Tybalt to calm down.
Who said the following lines and why?
A) “is she a Capulet? 0 dear account, my life is my foe’s debt.” Romeo says this when he learns that Juliet is a member of the Capulet family, who are his family’s enemies.
B) “My only love sprung from my only hate. Too early seen unknown and known too late.” Juliet says this when she learns that Romeo is a Montague, an enemy to her family.

How is this an example of dramatic irony? The audience knows what Juliet does not – that Romeo is there and hears here.

After Romeo and Juliet vow their love for one another, what do they decide to do and when? They decide to get married the next day
Why does Romeo go to see Friar Laurence? To ask him to marry him and Juliet.
How does Friar Laurence respond to Romeo’s request? At first he is confused and uncertain because Romeo had so recently been so unhappy about Rosaline, but he is convinced of Romeo’s love for Juliet and agrees
Why does Friar Laurence consent to Romeo’s request? He hopes their marriage will end the Montague/Capulet feud.

For whom is the nurse looking and why? She is looking for Romeo to give him a message from Juliet.
What warning does she give Romeo? She warns him that there will be trouble if he hurts Juliet.
scene 5
Juliet is waiting very impatiently for the nurse’s return. Why does she become so irritated when the nurse does return? The nurse keeps stalling before telling her what Romeo said.

Romeo and Juliet are married in Friar Laurence’s cell. How does this scene foreshadow future events? The Friar wans against haste and says they should love moderately.
