Macbeth: Apparitions

The 3 Apparitions
– Of an Unarmed Head- Beware Thane of Fife (Macduff)- Made him fearful but confirms what he already knows Describe the First Apparition, through how Macbeth responds, what it tells him and how he has been tricked.
– Of a Bloody Child- No man naturally born a woman can harm him- Reassured, over confident- Macduff was not ‘naturally’ born a woman (c-section) Describe the Second Apparition, through how Macbeth responds, what it tells him and how he has been tricked.
– Child crowned with a tree in his hand- Promises he will not be defeated until Birnam Wood comes to Dunisinane- Stubborn and demands more information, doesn’t believe it will ever happen- Army cuts trees down and holds infront of them to hide the advance Describe the Third Apparition, through how Macbeth responds, what it tells him and how he has been tricked.
Lady Macbeth’s Statements(Describe what she is referring to)
Duncan’s blood on her hands “Yet here’s a spot”
Duncan’s blood has come to represent guilt “Out damned spot, out”
She is in a living hell “Hell is murky”
No one can question their actions or their authority “No one can call our power to account”
Macduff’s wife is gone because of them and she has gone to heaven. “The Thane Of Fife had a wife”
What’s done is done, cannot be reversed “Banquo’s buried he cannot come out of his grave.”
Foreshadows what she said before the bell was ring signalling Macbeth to murder Duncan. “One, Two, why then tis time to d’ot”
After Duncan’s murder Macbeth arrives at the gate. It is as though she is re-living the night Duncan was murdered. “There’s knocking at the gate”
