Macbeth Act 2 Study Questions

(A2S1)Banquo and his son Fleance are on guard duty. What does Banquo say (what thoughts does he have)? Fleance says there’s no moon in the sky “The moon is down. I have not heard the clock.” & Banquo says theres no stars in the sky. “There’s husbandry in heaven; Their candles are all out.”
(A2S1)When Macbeth arrives, what do he and Banquo talk Banquo about ? Banquo says he dreamed of the 3 witches, Macbeth answers, “I think not of them” he’s lying, because he has been thinking about them no-stop.
(A2S2)Act II, scene 2 is probably the most famous scene in the play. Describe Macbeth’s emotional state before killing Duncan. What role does the dagger play? he is nervous and already feels guilty. he sees a vision of a bloody dagger that’s pointing him towards duncan’s room and also look like the dagger he has. the dagger represents the bloody course on which Macbeth is about to embark. it shows his mental instability.
(A2S2)Why does Macbeth allude to Hecate? Hecate was was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy. Macbeth believes the 3 witches made their offerings to hecate with him.
(A2S2)Why does Macbeth allude to Tarquin? Tarquin was a roman ruler who raped and murdered his cousin’s wife. Macbeth is attempting to evoke the prince’s tyrannical spirit in order to proceed with the murder
(A2S2)What is Lady Macbeth’s role in killing Duncan? She uses manipulation to convince him that the murder of Duncan must occur. Lady Macbeth pushes her husband into killing Duncan. she also got the guards drunk, and she would’ve killed duncan herself if he didn’t look so much like her father.
(A2S2)Describe Macbeth’s emotional state following the murder. he hears an imaginary voice, “Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep” he is also in panic, “I am afraid to think what i have done.”
(A2S2)How does Lady Macbeth react to him? – lady macbeth replied, “You do unbend your noble strength to think/So brainsickly of things” she is basically saying if you let yourself become this weak you will have these traumatizing thoughts. – she thinks that if they wash their hands it’ll all be over with, SIKE!
(A2S2)Describe the speech Macbeth makes as he washes his hands. Macbeth says, “How is ‘t with me when every noise appals me?/What hands are here? Ha! They pluck out mine eyes./Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood/Clean from my hand? No, this/my hand will rather/The multitudinous seas incarnadine,/Making the green one red.” he said instead of the neptune ocean washing his hands of blood, it’ll stain the ocean turning the water from green to red.
(A2S3)The Porter’s scene is inserted to supply comic relief. What is the gist of his speech? he is drunk, and pretending he is opening the gates of hell. he’s basically saying if someone was in charge of the gates of hell, he would open it alot for people because they’re sinners.
(A2S3)who does he let enter the gates(imaginary) he let in an imaginary farmer(who killed himself because grain was cheap), tailor(liked to skimp on the fabric for people’s clothes), and equivocator(two-faced con man who lied under oath).

What is its significance? something really bad just happened.!! “The night has been unruly. Where we lay,/Our chimneys were blown down and, as they say,/Lamentings heard i’ th’ air, strange screams of death,/And prophesying with accents terrible/Of dire combustion and confused events/New hatched to the woeful time. The obscure bird/Clamored the livelong night./Some say the Earth/Was feverous and did shake.”
(A2S3)When Macduff reports the murder of Duncan, how do Malcolm and Donalbain react? What decision do they make? Why? What impression does this decision make on the various lords? they fear that they’ll be next and plans to flee. malcolm planned to go to england while donalbain planned to go to ireland. they left secretly because they don’t know who the killer is. the lord grew suspicion because they left so suddenly, thinking they might have bribed someone to kill their father.

How does Macbeth explain this? macbeth kills them. he claims he killed them out of anger for “killing” duncan, “Oh, yet I do repent me of my fury,/That I did kill them.” he’s just trying to destroy any evidence from the scene because he think he heard them say something while he killed duncan.
(A2S4)Describe the content and significance of the conversation between Ross and the old man. What do they say has happened during the night (besides Duncan’s murder)? a lot of unnatural occurrences. The clock says it’s daytime but dark night is strangling the sun, an owl kills a falcon, duncan’s horses went crazy and ate eat other. the murder of king duncan has upset the natural order of nature.
(A2S4)What is Macduff’s opinion of Macbeth and of what has happened at this point? How does he express his opinion? when macduff learns that macbeth is gonna be crowned the new king, he is concerned that if macbeth is king, scotland is gonna be in bad shape. he’s gonna be worse than when duncan was king. “Lest our old robes sit easier than our new”
(A2S4)”Sleep” is referred to several times in this act. What does Macbeth say about sleep? He feels he will never sleep again because he destroyed the slumber (and life) of Duncan.Sleep symbolizes evil. “Sleep no more!/Macbeth does murder sleep”—the innocent sleep,/Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care,/The death of each day’s life, sore labor’s bath,/Balm of hurt minds, great nature’s second course,/Chief nourisher in life’s feast.”
