1. How does Macbeth lie to Banquo in scene 1? Macbetha tell banquo that he has not been thinking about the weird sisters (character flaw to lie to a best friend)
2. Towards the end of scene 1, what does Macbeth see? What does this item symbolize? Macbeth see a floating dagger. Symbolizes his confusion about killing Duncan and it is a dagger of the mind that shows him guilt ( dagger of the mind =metaphor)
3. What is the signal Lady Macbeth is to give Macbeth to let him know that she has taken care of the guards? Lady Macbeth will ring a bell that means everything is ready to kill Duncan. The bell that she rings is a funeral bell (knell) this bell ends Duncan’s life, macbeth’s integrity, and the partnership of the macbeth’s.
4. What excuse does Lady Macbeth give for not killing Duncan herself? Lady Macbeth thinks that Duncan look to much like her father when he is sleeping. This is the truth she says it to herself, where as when she says that she will stab the brains of her new born child to keep her word is false. The cruelty she prayed for she did not get.?
5. How does Macbeth feel immediately after the murder of Duncan? Provide a quote as support. Macbeth feels really guilty. ” as they had seen me with these hangman’s hands listing their fear I could not say amen”
6. What is Lady Macbeth’s advice to her husband for dealing with this emotion? Is this good advice? She tells him to not make a big deal about it. “Consider it not do deeply” This is bad advice bc what he did is wrong on many levels
7. How does Macbeth mess up Lady Macbeth’s murder plan? How does Lady Macbeth fix this mistake? Macbeth bring the daggers back with him and doesn’t leave them with the guards. Lady Macbeth takes the daggers from Macbeth and puts them with the guards and paints their faces with blood while Macbeth washes his hands
8. When Macbeth says, “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood/ Clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather/ the multitudinous seas incarnadine, /Making the green one red,” what does he mean? Explain the picture Shakespeare creates. This means that the guilt is so great that all the oceans water could not wash the guilt away and the whole ocean would turn red.

11. How does Lennox describe the night, and what is Macbeth’s response? Is Macbeth’s response dramatic, situational, or verbal irony? Lennox says it is stormy with an earthquake and hurricane and Macbeth responds with ” ’twas a rough night” which is verbal& dramatic irony along with equacation
12. Who discovers Duncan’s body? What is his reaction? Macbeth forces mcduff to find the body and his reaction was confusion bc he doesn’t understand why anyone would kill the king bc he has the divine right from God
13. What does Macbeth do to the supposed murderers? Why? Macbeth kills the guards because he was so mad that they killed Duncan but really it was to make sure the other Scott nobles can’t question the guards( Macbeth is now will omg to kill on his own and wear a false face)
14. Macduff say, “O gentle lady,/ ‘Tis not for you to hear what I can speak./ The repetition in a woman’ ear/ Would murder as it fell.” Is this dramatic, situational, or verbal irony? Dramatic irony bc she can’t handle it bc she is too gentle but she is the one that plots Duncan’s muder
15. Why do Malcolm and Donalbain decide to flee? To where? Malcom goes to England. Donalbain goes to Ireland
16. Who is not going to Macbeth’s coronation? Why? Mcduff goes to home( fife) instead of macbeth’s coronation bc he doesn’t trust Macbeth after he killed the guards
17. The Old Man say, “God’s benison go with you and with those/ That would make good of bad and friends of foes.” What does this line mean? This line means turn bad events into good ones and become friends with your enemies. God will curse those who do the opposite( Macbeth)
