| Act 2 Scene 1 | – Macbeth lies and tells Banquo that he doesn’t think about the witches’ prophecy which makes Banquo skeptical – Macbeth’s hallucination of the bloody dagger convinced him to kill Duncan |
| Act 2 Scene 2 | – Lady Macbeth waits for Macbeth to return. She says she couldn’t kill Duncan because he looked too much like her father. – Macbeth kills Duncan while his bodyguards are drugged, courtesy of Lady Macbeth. He is severely sleep deprived and can’t say “Amen”.- Lady Macbeth tells him to wash his hands and smear blood on the bodyguards but he refuses so she does it for him- Macbeth must accept that he is a murderer |
| Act 2 Scene 3 | – The porter serves as comic relief and acts as hell’s gatekeeper. He warns against the affects of too much alcohol.- Macduff finds Duncan’s dead body to which Macbeth and Lady Macbeth respond in fake surprise – Macbeth says that Duncan’s death empties the world of meaning and he defends killing the bodyguards – Malcolm and Donaldbain flee to England and Ireland which puts suspicion upon them |
| Act 2 Scene 4 | – Ross and an Old Man discuss what an unnatural night it has been: sun is obscured, owls kill falcons, and Duncan’s horses eat each other – Ross and Macduff discuss the news that Malcolm and Donalbain are responsible for their father’s murder- Ross heads for Scone, to see Macbeth crowned King of Scotland, but Macduff is going to stay home. |
| Act 3 Scene 1 | – Banquo suspects Macbeth killed Duncan, but doesn’t tell Macbeth. – Macbeth arranges for two men to kill Banquo while Banquo is on a ride with his son. – Macbeth persuades the murders that Banquo is evil and must die. |
| Act 3 Scene 2 | – Lady Macbeth is uneasy. Macbeth assures her that everything is under control, but he refuses to tell her what he is planning. |
| Act 3 Scene 3 | – Murderers kill Banquo but Fleance escapes |
| Act 3 Scene 4 | – Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost – Lady Macbeth asks him if he’s a man – Macbeth wants to see the witches – he will kill anyone who gets in his way |

| Act 3 Scene 6 | – Lennox and another Lord have a conversation which shows that they have seen through Macbeth’s lies and know that he is responsible for the murder of Banquo and King Duncan. -They also wish Macduff well, because he has gone to England for help in freeing Scotland from the tyrant Macbeth. |
