Who are the witches planning on meeting? Macbeth
Explain “Fair is foul, and foul is fair.” Witches chant; everything that is fair to the common people, the find foul bc they hate everything that is good and fair. (Bad is good to them and good is bad to them)
Where is the scene at Act 1; Scene 2? A camp near forres; town in northeast Scotland
Who is the King? Duncan
What has Macbeth done? Cut off the head of Macdwonald (Norway Army); fought rebels
What will happen to the current Thane of Cawdor? He will be executed and will loose his title
Who will inherit his (thane of Cawdor) title? Macbeth
What is a Heath? Rural area; area of open uncultivated land (unused); witches gather there
What are witches bragging about? (Their cruelty) 1st witch: Kills pig; 2nd witch: pilots thumb; 3rd witch: interfered with sailors ship because wife didn’t share her chestnuts
What is the first thing out of Macbeth’s mouth? WHY is this IMPORTANT? “So foul and fair a day I have not seen” ; important because this is the same thing the witches said at the beginning of the play
How does Banquo describe the witches? Withered; wild in attire; non-habitants of Earth, but here loving on Earth; choppy fingers; skinny lips; are women, but have beards
What 3 titles do the witches greet Macbeth with? (Prophecies) Thane of Glamis; Thane of Cawdor; Shalt be king hereafter (future king)
How do the witches greet Banquo? Says he:Lesser than Macbeth, and greaterNot so happy, yet happierDescendants will be kings, though thou be non (he won’t be one, but his children will be)
How does Macbeth respond to the witches predictions? Dumb founded/ shocked; wonders how he can be Thane of Cawdor if there already is one (which he is alive; healthy; and rich)
Can we trust what “seems”? (Line 81) No, because the witches are evil. (Though we know it’s true bc the king said it as well)
Examine line 117 and 131. What is the importance? That in the predictions … There’s still more predicted to come

Who is heir to the throne? What is his name and title? Macbeth; Thane of Cawdor (“my worthy Cawdor”)

What does Macbeth tell his wife in the letter? Witches have met them on the day of success battle; he was promoted to thane of Cawdor; king Duncan and him leave tomorrow
What is Lady Macbeth’s fear? What does she believe her husband lacks? Lady Macbeth fears he “too full o’th’ milk of human kindness”; says he has ambition, but not mean enough, too nice for these things; that he’s too afraid to do the things you need to get the things you want
