CHARACTER: Ralph the novel’s protagonist; a boy around the age of 12 and 1/2, Ralph is elected leader through the blowing of the conch. He is neither the smartest nor the strongest, but he possesses charisma and good looks. He tries to keep the boys focused on domestic order and the rules of civilization until they can be rescued, but he begins to lose his authority. Ralph’s ideas are formed through Piggy, which can question his true authority and leadership abilities. Though he is the brains of the group, he is also the center of social derision due to his weight, asthma, and general lack of physical prowess or stamina. He is never recognized for his values. The group of boys only see him useful through his specs which they use to start the fire. Piggy is often the one thinking about how to fix problems, but he is constantly ordered to “shut up”.
