What is Ralph realizing in necessary in order to be a leader? To be strict, to think fast
What rules have been ignored? Who works, where the bathroom is, and keeping up the fire
What does it mean when Ralph refers to the littluns as “taken short?” What does that mean? What does this show about their behavior? That they are sick, they aren’t taking care of themselves
What rule does Ralph make regarding fires? Only fire is on the mountain
A littlun says he sees something moving in the jungle at night. Who/what is it? Simon
How does Jack explain the beast? He says it doesn’t exist and says everyone needs to just put up with it
Why are rules important to Ralph? Because he knows that its the only thing holding the boys from complete anarchy
What does Simon mean when he says, “What I mean is maybe it’s only us; We could be sort of…” What do you think “Mankind’s essential illness” is? -The monster is part of them and the fear is creating the beastie, but the monster is in them-Savagery
Why does he ask, “What is the dirtiest thing there is?” To make the boys realize that the beast may be them
Why doesn’t Ralph blow the conch when the meeting dissolves into chaos? He isn’t sure if he still wants to be the chief
At the end of the chapter, what does Ralph wish for? His dad or a sign from adults
