Polonius responds with this quote. saying that Ophelia’s wish is a popular one-all the time people pretend like they are pious to conceal bad intentions.

When Claudius hears this, he agrees violently. He adds saying that another example of this is when a ***** wears makeup to pretend she is beautiful. In Claudius’s life, he feels he has been hiding his dirty conscience. This quote signifies his guilt.
“You should not have believed me, for virtue cannot soinoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it.” Now mad at Ophelia, Hamlet tells her that she was dumb for believing that he loved her because everyone is rotten at the core and evil and nobody even cares.
“I am myself indifferent honest, but yet I couldaccuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not borne me.” Hamlet tells Ophelia that he is generally a good person but can be accused of certain things that would be better if he was never born.
“What should such fellows as I do crawling between earthand heaven? We are arrant knaves, all.” Hamlet tells Ophelia that he is unsure why people have the privilege to live ricocheting between earth and heaven when we are all criminals.
“God hasgiven you one face and you make yourselves another.” Hamlet knows that Polonius is creeping and watching, so he asks where her father is, she lies, & he rightfully says YOU A TWO FACED BITCH OPHELIA
“Those that are married already, all but one, shalllive.” Hamlet tells Ophelia that he is fed up with the way everyone is acting. He says that everyone who is married will stay married, but there will not any more marriages. The only change that Hamlet plans will occur is that Gertrude will be single.
“There’s something in his soulO’er which his melancholy sits on brood,And I doubt the hatch and the discloseWill be some danger-.” Claudius predicts to Polonius that Hamlet’s depression is like an egg waiting to be hatched. When it hatched, he predicts all hell with break loose.
“But yet do I believeThe origin and commencement of his griefSprung from neglected love.” Polonius tells Claudius that he still believes his theory that the reason for Hamlet’s madness is his lovesickness.
“Madness in great ones must not unwatched go.” Claudius tells Polonius that when important people are crazy, you must pay close attention.
“Nowthis overdone or come tardy off, though it make theunskillful laugh, cannot but make the judicious grieve, thecensure of the which one must in your allowance o’erweigh” Hamlet tells the first player that when actors try to add in lines to be funny or cute, only ignorant people laugh. Again, this is social commentary from Shakespeare.
“Give me that manThat is not passion’s slave, and I will wear himIn my heart’s core, ay, in my heart of heart,As I do thee.” Hamlet says this when praising Horatio for his sensibility and logic.
“One scene of it comes near the circumstanceWhich I have told thee of my father’s death.” This infers that Hamlet told Horatio of his father’s death.
“Give him heedful note.For I mine eyes will rivet to his face,And after we will both our judgments joinIn censure of his seeming..” hamlet tells horatio to check if claudius is looking guilty during the play
“For, look you, how cheerfully mymother looks, and my father died within these two hours.” hamlet says this to ophelia saying how happy his mom looks two hours after his father died. when ophelia says its been two months, hamlet says it hasn’t felt that long.
“What, frighted with false fire?” yo dumb ho ophelia, you scared of a fake gun?
“I will speak daggers to her but use none.” Hamlet tells himself that he will only verbally abuse his mother and not hurt her
“The cease of majestyDies not alone, but, like a gulf, doth drawWhat’s near it with it.” rosencrantz tells claudius that when a great leader dies that he takes the whole country down with him
“Never aloneDid the king sigh, but with a general groan.” rozencrantz says that when a king makes a simple saddened gesture, the entire country overreacts so the king must be weary with his actions
“It hath the primal eldest curse upon’t,A brother’s murder.” claudius soliloquy referring to cain & abel
“May one be pardoned and retain th’ offense?” claudius soliloquy asking if he can be forgiven but still keep the rewards
“But ’tis not so above.There is no shuffling. There the action liesIn his true nature, and we ourselves compelled,Even to the teeth and forehead of our faults,To give in evidence.” claudius soliloquy about when someone dies, they face exactly who they really are
“A villain kills my father, and, for that,I, his sole son, do this same villain sendTo heaven.Oh, this is hire and salary, not revenge.” when hamlet sees claudius praying, he realizes he cannot kill him right there because he will go to heaven. so, he says this quote, meaning that he needs to wait and kill him in the act of something evil
“For this same lord,I do repent. But heaven hath pleased it so,To punish me with this and this with me,That I must be their scourge and minister.” hamlet is sorry for killing polonius, but god wanted to punish polonius for something and thats why it happened.
