Act 1 Scene 1 Barnado, Francisco and Marcellus stand guard with Horatio, awaiting the ghost to prove its existence to Horatio.
Act 1 Scene 2 The courtroom. Claudius mourns the King’s death, Laertes gets permission to leave for France, messengers are dispatched to Norway and Hamlet is persuaded not to return to Wittenburg and told off for mourning his Father. All but Hamlet exit and Horatio tells Hamlet about the ghost.
Act 1 Scene 3 Laertes tells Ophelia to be careful of Hamlet. Polonius delivers his contradictory speech to Laertes then Laertes Leaves. Polonius tells Ophelia to avoid Hamlet and not to talk to him at all.
Act 1 Scene 4 Hamlet, Horatio and Marcellus await the ghost. It appears and beckons Hamlet away, but Horatio and Marcellus plan to follow.
Act 1 Scene 5 The ghost tell Hamlet of his murder, suggesting he cannot rest untill he is avenged. Hamlet takes Marcellus and Horation into confidence but swears them to secrecy.
Act 2 Scene 1 Polonius sends Reynaldo to spy on Laertes. Ophelia tells of Hamlet appearing, mad, in her closet.
Act 2 Scene 2 The King and Queen greet Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Polonius tells the King and Queen about Hamlet’s madness and love for Ophelia, showing them a letter sent to Ophelia. They suspect this is the cause of Hamlet’s grief and madness. Hamlet greets Rosencrantz and Guildernstern and the players arrive. All exit and Hamlet gives a soliloquy/rant.
Act 3 Scene 1 The King, Queen, Rosencrantz and Guildernstern conclude that Hamlet is mad, and the King and Polonius decide to watch him secretly with Ophelia. ‘To be or not to be’ speech, then Ophelia arrives. Hamlet denies any affection for her and goes mad at her. The King and Polonius puzzle over it.
Act 3 Scene 2 Hamlet instructs the players and invites the King and Queen. Hamlet concludes that the King is guilty but the King is furious. Gertrude sends for Hamlet.
Act 3 Scene 3 The King, Polonoius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern plan for Hamlet to go to England.
Act 3 Scene 4 Bedroom scene – Hamlet tries to get the truth from his mother but struggles, they confuse each other but we see different elements of both of their characters. Hamlet kills Polonius.
Act 4 Scene 1 The King and Queen tell Rosencrantz and Guildernstern about Polonius’ death and ask them to get the body from Hamlet.
Act 4 Scene 2 The King and Queen ask Hamlet for the body.
Act 4 Scene 3 All search for the nody, Claudius tells Hamlet that he must quickly leave for England.
Act 4 Scene 4 Hamlet is leaving Denmark when he meets Fortinbras and troops en route to claim Polish land. Hamlet soliloquy about being unable to take action despite need.
Act 4 Scene 5 Ophelia appears mad to the King and Queen. Laertes appears to discover the fate of his Father and sees Ophelia.
Act 4 Scene 6 Horatio recieves a letter from Hamlet telling him that he is retourning to Denmark.
Act 4 Scene 7 Laertes and the King plan revenge upon Hamlet. The Queen announces that Ophelia had drowned.
Act 5 Scene 1 The graveyard scene, leaves Hamlet contemplating death and murder with Horaio. Ophelia’s funeral commences, and Hamlet shows himself, confessing his love. Hamlet tells Horatio that Rosencratz and Guildernstern will be dead.
Act 5 Scene 2 Osrick is sent to request Hamlet’s presence. Hamlet and Laertes duel, Laertes hits Hamlet with a poisoned blade. Hamlet and Laertes forgive each other, Gertrude drinks poison intended for Hamlet, Hamlet forces Claudius to poison himself. Fortinbras invades and takes Denmark.
