Hamlet 3.1 soliloquy “to be or not to be”

to be or not to be: that is the question:what is the question to live or to die
“Whether it is nobler in the mind of the suffer The slings and the arrows of the outrageous fortune, or to take the arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing end them? Is it more noble to SUFFER HIS PAIN or to KILL HIMSELF
To die, to sleep-No more- and by a sleep to say we endThe heart ache and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to- what is hamlet comparing sleep to ? what is the literary device he’s using? Hamlet is comparing sleep to death (metaphor)
“tis a consummationDevoutly to be wish’d. consumption + two things blending, coming together what does Hamlet wish? Wishes when he dies the problems will go away
To die, to sleep–To sleep, perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub; What’s the problem? What will happen AFTER his death
For in that sleep of death what dreams may comewhen we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause*** What makes us pause, or second-guess this “sleep”? the dream that come along with the “sleep” Doesn’t know what comes after
There’s the respectThat makes calamity of so long lifeWhat is “calamity”? Find another definition for “respect” other than “acting politely” unhappiness disaster = calamity value= respect
For who would bear the whips and scants of timeThe oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely The pangs of despised love, the laws delay the insolence office and the spurnsthat patient merit of the unworthy takes For who would TAKE the following things/list 3:wrongly Oppressednot being lovedinjustice, rude/disrespected
When he himself might his quietus make with a bare bodkin? When he could just KILL HIMSELF
Who would gardens bear,To grunt and sweat under a weary life,But that the dread of something after death The undiscovered’d country form whose bournNo traveller returns, What is the “undiscovered county” that inspires “dread”? The afterlife/hell
Puzzles the willAnd makes us rather bear those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of?what effect does that dread have on people? Rather deal/put up with their problems than to go somewhere they don’t know anything about/the unknown
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all; and thus the native hue of resolution is sicklied o’er with the pale case of thought****What is the color of resolution? What is the color of thought ? how does this relate back to why Hamlet was angry with himself in an earlier sililoquy? red paleness feels like a coward b/c he only thinks with no action/
And enterprises of great pith and moment with this regard their currents turn awryAnd lose the name of action***What is the outcome, which Hamlet has been struggling with the entire play? How does this apply to Claudius? how does it apply to Hamlet? Talked himself out of suicide and killing claudius
-Soft you now!The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisonsBe all my sins remember’dWait! here comes Ophelia! Remember me in your prayers. Hamlet is asking Ophelia to pray to God to punish him for his sins
