Who is Jordon Baker? What does Nick find appealing about her? Jordon Baker is a golfer that is a friend of Tom and Daiy’s
How does Daisy react to phone calls from Tom’s woman in New York? She ignores it and then gets upset by it.
What is Gatsby doing when Nick first see’s him? He is standing on his lawn with his arms reaching out towards the water.
Notice how many times Fitz Gerald uses the words hopes and dreams? Why does he do this? He uses it to reveal the idea of the American Dream.
Nick starts the novel by relaying his father’s advice “Whenever you feel like critizising anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages you had” Does he reserve judgement in the novel? Yes it appears in chapter 1 that he is reserving judgement to the other characters.
Pay attention to time. What is the day and year during the first scene at daisy’s house? It is June 10th 1922 because Daisy notes it will be the longest day of the year.
Describe Nick. What facts do you know about him and what facts do you infer about him? What kind of narrator do you think he’ll be? Nick comes from a promanant family. He graduated from Yale. He seems to be a non judgemental person. He seems to be a good nonbiast narrator.
What image does the author use to describe Jordon Baker? What does it mean? Gerald describes Jordan as a balloon billowing slowly in the wind.
How does Nick react to Jordan? He is attracted to Jordan and says he enjoyed looking at her.
What does Tom’s behavior reveal about his character? He is a racist because he shows interest in a racist book called the Rise of The Colored Empires.
How does Nick meet Tom’s mistress? Tom and Nick go to New York city and he meets her at George Wilson’s auto shop.
How does Myrtle react to Tom’s arrival? She is excited and vivacious. She is clearly awaiting his arrival.
Describe George Wilson? How does he react to Tom’s arrival? He is quiet and weak. He is happy to see Tom because he’s trying to buy a car from him to sell and needs the money.
How does Myrtle behave as the party progresses? She becomes loud and obnoxious
According to Katherine why has Tom not left Daisy to marry Myrtle? Because Daisy is a Catholic and they don’t believe in divorce.
Why did Tom break Myrtle’s nose? How is this consistent with him in the author’s description of him in chapter 1? Judging by his wife Daisy and Myrtle what seems to by Tom’s attitude toward women? Tom breaks Myrtles nose by back handing her in the face because she keeps chanting Daisy’s name. It shows that men are superior to women and men do not treat women well.
Describe the valley of the ashes. What does it look like and what does it represent? The valley of the ashes is a poor land, with dirty air and pollution. It is a dying land. It’s the waist land between east and west egg.
Describe Mr. Wilson and Myrtle. Mr. Wilson is a weak unconfident man while Myrtle is full of life and arrogant. Mr. Wilson doesn’t seem to fit into the setting while Myrtle does because she is interested and social stature.
What more have you learned about Nick in this chapter? Is he similar or different then the people he spends his time with? Nick seems like he wants to fit in with the people around him but is not selfish and arrogant as these people. He seems to be interested in making money but shows respect and decency towards other people.
