Victor Frankenstein The eponymous gothic protagonist – a transgressor of boundaries who plays god in his quest for knowledge
Felix Delacey The Delacey son who is poor and considered lonely. He beats the monster and is a possible catalyst for the murders
The Monster Represents the consequences of playing god. Any sympathy we had is lost due to his actions
Henry Clerval Victor’s boyhood friend, who nurses Victor back to health in Ingolstadt. After working unhappily for his father, Henry begins to follow in Victor’s footsteps as a scientist. His cheerfulness counters Victor’s moroseness.
Mr Delacey Blind old man who talks to the monster without fear because he cannot see him
William Frankenstein Victor’s youngest brother who’s childhood is taken away from him when the monster strangles him in the woods outside Geneva in order to hurt Victor for abandoning him. His death deeply saddens Victor and burdens him with tremendous guilt about having created the monster.
Alphonse Frankenstein Victor’s father, very sympathetic toward his son. He consoles Victor in moments of pain and encourages him to remember the importance of family.
Elizabeth Lavenza An orphan who the Frankensteins adopt. In the 1818 edition of the novel, she is Victor’s cousin, the child of Alphonse Frankenstein’s sister. she embodies the novel’s motif of passive women, as she waits patiently for Victor’s attention. Her death leads Victor to take revenge
Justine Mortiz lived with the Frankenstein family, hung for the murder of William – allowed to die even though Victor knows of her innocence
Safie Is taught English in the cottage and the monster learns along-side her
Agatha Delacey The daughter of Delacey. She is a mild-mannered and sweet girl.
Caroline Beaufort dies of scarlet fever and becomes an absent mother. Causes evidence of the Oedipus complex, shown through Victor’s dream of kissing her corpse
Margaret Saville The sister of Robert Walton and the recipient of his letters
Ernest Frankenstein Frankenstein’s younger brother – a very minor character who is rather sickly and then goes off to war He is the only Frankenstein to survive the novel
