Checking for Understanding Questions: Chapters 2-8

Why does Scout end up in trouble on her first day of school? Because she knew how to read and write
What does Scout say to Walter Cunningham that gets her into trouble? That he can’t afford lunch
Why are the Ewells allowed special privileges? Because people didn’t want to even deal with them and the people of maycomb were embarrassed and disgusted towards them
What compromise does Atticus make with Scout? He will teach her if she doesn’t tell the teacher and go to school
What does Scout share at the end of the chapter? That when she got out of the tire she heard laughing
Who was inside the house? The book doesn’t say but i think it was boo radley
What reasons does Atticus give when he tells the children to leave Boo alone and stop playing the Boo Radley game? Atticus foreshadows the lesson he tries to teach the town of Maycomb by defending Tom Robinson.
What explanation does Jem give for his missing pants? Jem lies and says that Dill won his pants in a strip poker game. He knows that Atticus would be mad if he knew that he was sneaking into the Radley yard in hopes of getting a glimpse of Boo.
What does Jem confess to Scout? That when he returned to the Radley property, he found his pants waiting for him folded upon the fence–freshly stitched in a “crooked” manner.

Who put the blanket on Scout? How do you know? Boo Radley put it on her, and he reveals the whole story of the knothole, the presents, and the mended pants to Atticus.
